Recognising and removing weed seedlings becomes second nature to experienced gardeners as they know that ignoring them brings more work later. They are much easier to deal with and can be added to the compost heap. Also as the Ephemeral weeds can mature so quickly the sooner they have gone the better. Commercial growers need to deal with weeds at an early stage as it curtails damage to crops and greatly reduces the amounts of herbicides to be used.

Below are some pictures of weed seedlings. The first two seed leaves or cotyledons of many of them are very similar and it is not until the true leaves emerge that they can be distinguished - as can be seen in the pictures of the Common Hemp-nettle and Cleavers seedlings.
