This is a series of galleries with images of leaves of common weeds. While leaves are the largest feature of most plants and are a good initial means of identifying a plant, the characteristics which are more definitive are the flowers and fruit. Most of the pictures in the monographs for plants described on this site include a picture of the flowers and some fruit. Click on the leaf picture or title to go to the monograph for details and how to deal with them.
The leaves are arranged in groups according to growth habit although some could be in a category which applies only at certain times of the year, ie. many plants grow as basal rosettes or low clumps and produce flowering stems which can be many times taller. Due to the varying sizes of the leaves they are not shown to scale in most cases, but the essential features should be recognizable.
The pictures on this page are leaves from plants that grow close to the ground as a single plant, with leaves arising from a central growing point. (Most biennial plants could be in this section as they grow like this in their first season, but their tall flowering stem puts them in the Upright Stems section.)
